Bonsai Presentations/Workshops at Universities
   
  The Sri Lanka Bonsai Association conducted a presentation on Bonsai at the Faculty of Agriculture, Rajarata University , Anuradhapura, for the Undergraduates. It was conducted by the President of the Association, Mr.M.A.Pemasiri.
   
  It was followed up with a Presentation and a Workshop at the Faculty of Agriculture, Sabaragamuwa University, Belihuloya. It was organized by Senior Lecturer, Dr. Kapila Kumara. Dean of the Faculty, Dr. H.S.R.Rosairo too particiapated. M/s Vinnie Gunaratne & Janaka Basuriya assisted Mr.Pemasiri, in conducting the Workshop.

Donation by The Sri Lanka Bonsai Association to The Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital
   
  The Sri Lanka Bonsai Association recently donated a Pediatric Blood Pressure Apparatus and a stock of books and stationery items, to the Endocrine & Diabetes Unit of the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, Colombo. The pediatric BP apparatus has been an urgent need of the Unit, and The Association used the proceeds of the Last Year’s Bonsai Exhibition, to purchase the above items. This was made possible due to special donations received from few well-wishers.

Kalabushana Award for a Senior Bonsai Artist
   
  Mr. K.M. Tillekeratne, a senior member of The Sri Lanka Bonsai Association who has excelled in the art of Bonsai, was one of the recipients of Kalabushana State Awards for the year 2015, organized by the Department of Cultural Affairs. This award ceremony was held on 15th December 2015, at the National Youth Council Auditorium, Maharagama, under the patronage of Hon. S.B. Navinna, Minister of Cultural Affairs.
   
  Kalabushana State awards are given annually, for Artists over the age of 60 years, who have rendered an inestimable service for the arts and literature in Sri Lanka, with their creations.
   
  This year, a total number of 301 artists were selected for these Awards. Mr. Tillekeratne was one of the 14 artists who were honored in the category of art and sculpture.
   
  Mr. Tillekeratne was the recipient of the award for the Best Exhibitor of Bonsai for many years, at the Annual Bonsai Exhibition, organized by the Sri Lanka Bonsai Association. We are proud of the achievement of our senior member, and we wish to convey our warm greetings to him.

SLBA Annual Exhibition – Reflections 2015 – Living Images
   
  Annual Exhibition of the Sri Lanka Bonsai Association for the Year 2015, “Reflections 2015 – Living Images” was held on 3rd and 4th October 2015, at the National Art Gallery, Colombo. Opening Ceremony was held on 2nd October. Madam Asako Okai, Deputy Ambassador for Japan in Sri Lanka was the chief guest.
   
  Mr. Naveen Sooriyarachchi was the winner of the Japanese Ambassador’s Trophy for the Best Exhibitor on show. Ms. Pauline Herath won the awards for the Best Group of Bonsai on show and the Best Bonsai Collection. The award for the Best Bonsai on show, was won by Mr. Naveen Sooriyarachchi.
   
  Over 200 Bonsai Plants of high quality along with a good collection of Suiseki were at display. A large number of Bonsai Enthusiasts visited the Exhibition, held for two days.
   
  Over 25 new members joined the Association, during the exhibition.

Opening Ceremony was held on 10th October. Madam Asako Okai, Deputy Ambassador for Japan in Sri Lanka,  was the chief guest.
   
  Mr. K.M. Thilakeratne won the Japanese Ambassador’s Trophy for the Best Exhibitor on show. He also won the award for the Best Group of Bonsai and the Best Collection of Bonsai. Mr. Naveen Sooriyarachchi won the award for the Best Bonsai on show.
   
  Over 200 Bonsai Plants of high quality along with a good collection of Suiseki were at display. A large number of Bonsai Enthusiasts visited the Exhibition, held for three days.

  Annual Exhibition of the Sri Lanka Bonsai Association for the Year 2013, “Reflections 2013 – Living Images” was held between 4th and 6th October 2013, at the National Art Gallery, Colombo. Opening Ceremony was held on 4th October. His Excellency Nobuhito Hobo, Ambassador for Japan in Sri Lanka, and Madam Hobo were the chief guests.
   
  Mr. K. M. Thilakeratne and Mr. H. D. Ariyasena were the joint winners of  the Japanese Ambassador’s Trophy for the Best Exhibitor on show. Mr. Ariyasena also won the award for the Best Group of Bonsai on show and  the award for the Best Bonsai on show.
   
  Over 200 Bonsai Plants of high quality along with a good collection of Suiseki were at display. A large number of Bonsai Enthusiasts visited the Exhibition, held for three days.

SLBA Annual Exhibition – “Reflections 2012 - Living Images”
   
 
   
  Reflections 2012, Annual Exhibition of the Sri Lanka Bonsai Association for the Year 2012, “Reflections 2012 – Living Images” was held between 24th and 26th August 2012, at the National Art Gallery, Colombo. Opening Ceremony was held on 24th August , with the Minister of the Japanese Embassy, Mr. Hideki Ishizuka as the Chief Guest. Mr. Ishizuka and Mr. K. Iwase, Second Secretary, Cultural & Information of the Japanese Embassy, gave away the awards for the winners in the competition category.

Talk on Grafting Techniques (March 2012)
   
  Continuing on the series of talks by external experts, Mr. T. Gamage, Retired Deputy Director, Department of Agriculture, gave a talk on “Grafting Techniques” during the members’ monthly meeting held on 23rd March 2012.
   
  He explained the different methods of grafting used for plant propagation, where special emphasis was made on the methods, which could be adopted in styling Bonsai plants.

SLBA Annual Exhibition – “Reflections 2012”

   
  The annual Bonsai Exhibition of The Sri Lanka Bonsai Association, “Reflections 2012” will be held at the National Art Gallery, Colombo from 24th to 26th August 2012.
   
  A large collection of Bonsai plants of high quality, created by the members of the Association will be on display at this exhibition. Demonstrations on creating Bonsai will be held daily, during the exhibition, for the benefit of those who are interested in starting with this wonderful art.

Workshop and Mini Exhibition (August 2011)
   
 

A workshop and a Mini Exhibition was held on 27th August, for the benefit of members, preparing for the Annual Exhibition scheduled to be held from 14th to 16th October. The day’s proceedings commenced with a talk and presentation on “Plant Deceases – Identification and Prevention” by Mr. Shantha Perera, well known Horticulturist. Mr. Perera explained different plant deceases caused by insects as well as Fungus attacks, with samples and photographs. The importance of selection of correct treatments based on the correct identification of the plant deceases was stressed by Mr. Perera. Above presentation was very useful for all the members, who are frequently faced with various deceases on Bonsai Plants.

   
  Lunch was taken after the conclusion of the above presentation. A Film on Bonsai was screened during the Lunch Break.
   
  Afternoon session commenced with a talk by Mrs. Druki Martenstyn, who explained various techniques used in creating Bonsai. She went on to create a Forest (Group Planting) where members were able to learn essential features involved in Group Planting.
   
  There were many plants brought by the members for necessary guidance on Styling.
   
  Senior members – Mrs. Shanti Fernando, Mr. H D Ariyasena and Mr. M A Pemasiri were there to give the new members, a helping hand in pruning, wiring and styling of the plants.
   
  Proceedings concluded at 3.00 pm.

Bonsai Exhibition (March 2011)
   
 

A Bonsai Exhibition and Workshop was organised by the The Embassy of Japan in collaboration with Sri Lanka Bonsai Association and BMICH on 1st March 2011 from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. at Mihilaka Medura or Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall.

   
  The Embassy of Japan brought down  Mr. Yasuhisa Yamaguchi, President, Jyugei PLC, Specialist of Bonsai and Dr. Eijiro Fujii, Chief Professor of Landscape Management, University of Chiba, Japan, for this  event. Mr. Yamaguchi made a special presentation and gave his specialist comments on the plants displayed at the Exhibition, He also attended to the plants brought by the members for advise on styling. Prof. Fujii gave a public lecture on Japanese Landscaping.
